The Sea Lion Snorkeling Experience

Swimming with sea lions in La Paz is one of the most iconic and unforgettable experiences you can have in Baja California Sur!

This activity primarily takes place in the colonies that inhabit the Espíritu Santo Archipelago National Park, famously known as “the aquarium of the world.”

1. Main Locations

Swimming is done at two main spots, depending on the time of year:

  • Los Islotes: This is the most famous location and home to a large colony of hundreds of sea lions. It is located at the northern tip of Espíritu Santo Island. It’s an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving, where the younger, more playful sea lions often approach visitors curiously.
  • San Rafaelito Reef: This small colony near Balandra beach is used as an alternative swimming location during the sea lion breeding season at Los Islotes.

It’s important to be aware of the regulations set by the Protected Natural Area (ANP):

September to May — Los Islotes (primary):  High season for swimming. This is the best time to interact with the juvenile sea lions.

June to August — San Rafaelito (alternative):  Swimming and free diving at Los Islotes are restricted by government regulations due to the breeding and pupping season. The activity is instead carried out at alternative colonies.

Recommendations:

  • Book in advance, especially during the high season.

  • Make sure the tour includes a wetsuit, as the water can be cool, particularly in the winter months.

  • Respect the guide’s instructions and the park rules to ensure your safety and the welfare of the animals.
