Balandra Beach, or Playa Balandra, is one of Mexico’s most famous and beautiful beaches. It is located in the Balandra Bay, about a 30-minute drive north of La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur.
What Balandra is Known For
-
Shallow, Turquoise Waters: The bay is incredibly shallow, allowing visitors to walk far out into the water, which is often only hip-deep or less. The water is famously calm, bright, and crystal-clear.
-
“El Hongo” (The Mushroom Rock): Balandra is home to an iconic mushroom-shaped rock formation, a geological wonder and popular photo spot that has become an unofficial symbol of La Paz.
-
Natural Protected Area: The bay is a designated Balandra Wildlife Protection Area since 2008, encompassing seven beaches, extensive mangroves, and sand dunes. This status is why access is strictly regulated.
-
Desert-Meets-Sea Landscape: The stunning contrast of golden, rocky desert hills surrounding the turquoise bay creates a unique and spectacular view.
Visitor Access and Logistics
Due to its protected status, access to Balandra Beach is strictly limited and managed in time slots to preserve the environment.
